We offer high-quality English instruction based on the communicative approach, which emphasize conversation practice using language functions that are practical and authentic for adult learners. Class sizes are small and lessons focus on the acquisition of useful vocabulary and grammatical structures.
Our instructors are native English speakers trained in engaging learners in classroom exercises and activities that improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Through our dedicated team of volunteers, ESL is able to provide a comfortable, fun and natural environment for language learning.
ESL uses professional adult ESL curricula and materials based on national standards and best practices in the field of adult ESL instruction.
We offer five levels – from beginning to advanced. At registration, students take an exam so they may be placed in the appropriate class level. When they complete the advanced course, students may join the ongoing conversation class, which allows them to continue to build fluency in the language.
At the end of each session, students who have met course requirements receive a Certificate of Participation or Certificate of Course Completion. In addition, every April we celebrate our students' and volunteers' achievements with a graduation ceremony and party. Students and their families are invited to celebrate their accomplishments with food, drinks, music and dancing. The graduation party is an opportunity for us to recognize our students’ progress as well as the contributions of all of our hardworking, dedicated volunteers.
• We recommend that you bring a bilingual dictionary (English and your native language) to class. The dictionary can help you with new words and with spelling.
• We recommend that you arrive on time to the classes. The classes begin promptly at 7:00 pm on weeknights and at 9:00 am on Saturdays. If you arrive late, you will miss part of class.
• We recommend that you attend each class. Learning a language demands much from students. To learn as quickly as possible, it is best to be in class at every opportunity.
• We recommend that students practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing English as much as possible outside of class. It is important to try to use the language every day. You should listen to the radio and watch television in English even though they may not understand (one must listen to begin to understand). Use the vocabulary and grammar you learn and practice it every time you have an opportunity.
• Don't give up! Have patience. Little by little you learn a lot!
